Valerie Tryon in Recital

October 12th, 2023

Valerie Tryon’s extraordinary career spans over 80 years. She had already broadcast for the BBC by the time she was twelve and was appearing regularly before the public on the concert platform. She was one of the youngest students to be admitted to the Royal Academy of Music where she received the highest award in piano playing and a scholoarship to Paris to study with the distinguished pianist Jacques Février.
Valerie’s repertoire is enormous and ranges from Bach to Stravinsky and of her innumerable recordings many are now regarded as collector’s items. Recent recordings with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra include de Falla’s “Nights in the Gardens of Spain”, César Franck’s “Symphonic Variations”, Dohnányi’s “Variations on a Nursery Theme”, Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto no.1, in F-sharp minor. and a Mozart recording with conductor Boris Brott. She is presently preparing a double disc recording of what she calls “my favourite solo pieces” for the Somm label in London and has just completed a double DVD –“The Great Romantics” and “Remembering Jacque Février’.
She is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music, a Juno Award winner, holds the Harriet Cohen Award for Distinguished Services to Music, and the Franz Liszt Medal from the Hungarian Ministry of Culture for her lifelong commitment to and promotion of Liszt’s music. In December of 2017 she was awarded Canada’s highest honour, The Order of Canada,
Valerie’s archives to date are held at McMaster University.
